In Turkish suffixes are formed according to vowel harmony.
Sounds of the vowels are made either front or back vowels. Native Turkish word incorporates either exclusively back vowels (a, ı, o, and u) or exclusively front vowels (e, i, ö, and ü).
Front vowels | e,i,ö,ü | Elbise (dress) ülke (country) Kedi (cat) Öğrenci (student) |
Back vowels | a,ı,o,u | kapı (door) armut (pear) araba (car) radyo (radio) |
